Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel visited Nairobi yesterday (12 Jul 2011) on a one-day stop on a three-country tour of Africa.

‘Merkel hailed the longstanding ties between Kenya and Germany, noting her country was among the first nations of the world to recognize Kenya upon independence in 1963. . . .

‘Merkel who arrived in Kenya on Monday evening will also attend Kenya-German trade conference and visit the United Nation Environmental Programme (UNEP) and the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), where German scientists have been working for decades on ways to use farm animals as instruments for poverty alleviation.

‘The German leader is on her second tour of Africa since she took over as Chancellor in 2005.

‘Kenya is among the three African States Merkel is visiting others are Angola and Nigeria.’
